Ducati 1198

The Ducati 1198 is a sport bike made by Ducati since 2009. For the 2011 model year there are two models: the 1198 and 1198SP (replacing the 1198S). The 1198 shares design elements with its predecessor 1098, but has more power and torque, redesigned wheels, lighter headlights, traction control, and lighter fairings (on the S model), and a few minor paint changes. Another carryover from its 998 heritage is a distinctive single-sided swingarm.

Performance

The 1198/1198 SP makes a manufacturer claimed 170 hp (127 kW), 97.1 ft·lbf (131.6 N·m) torque, and has a dry weight of 173 kg (380 lb). Rear wheel output was tested as 117.75 kilowatts (157.91 hp) @ 9600 rpm and 90.14 ft·lbf (122.21 N·m) torque at 8300 rpm, with a wet weight of 441 lb (200 kg). The 0–60 mph time is less than 2.5 seconds and top speed is estimated at 186 mph (299 km/h). The 1198 R makes a manufacturer claimed 180 hp (134 kW) and 98.8 ft·lbf (134.0 N·m) torque.

Raid nets 4 suspected makers of 'ya ba' drug

The suspects were named as Bancherd Yodmali, 38, a councillor of the Muang Tha Khlong Municipality, Kamol Chaemchuen, 30, Somsak Phuangmali, 58, and 33-year-old Chakkrit Sudkid.They surrendered to a combined force of police, Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) officers and Office of the Narcotics Control Board agents after being surrounded for 40 minutes at 6am yesterday morning.A manual tablet press allegedly used to produce methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as ya ba, was also seized from a house on Liap Khlong Ann 1-2 in tambon Khlong Nueng. When the house was raided, the four suspects fled into a wooded area nearby.A helicopter was used to track them down and the officers surrounded them.NSB chief Atithep Panjamanond said police had been monitoring the suspects for eight months before their arrest.A crucial piece of information came to light three days ago when a number of drug traffickers were arrested.They allegedly confessed to collecting drugs from the house that was raided.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui island of Surat Thani Province or often, simply Samui as it is referred to by locals, is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, close to the mainland Surat Thani town. It is Thailand's second largest island, with an area of 228.7 km2 and a population of over 50,000 (2008). It is rich with natural resources, white sandy beaches, coral reefs and coconut trees.

The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and Southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to 1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name Samui is mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui, or from the Malay word Saboey, meaning "safe haven"[citation needed]. Ko is the Thai word for "island".

Until the late 20th century, Ko Samui was an isolated self-sufficient community, having little connection with the mainland of Thailand. The island was even without roads until the early 1970s, and the 15 km journey from one side of the island to the other involved a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles. Ko Samui has a population of about fifty-five thousand (source: Samui Mayor's Office) and is based primarily on a successful tourist industry, as well as exports of coconut and rubber. It even has its own international airport, Samui Airport, with flights daily to Bangkok and other major airports in Southeast Asia such as Hong Kong and Singapore. Whilst the island presents an unspoiled image to the public perception, economic growth has brought not only prosperity, but changes to the island's environment and culture, a source of conflict between local residents and migrants from other parts of Thailand and other countries. Reflecting Samui's growth as a tourist destination, the Cunard ship MS Queen Victoria (a 2000-plus passenger ship) docked at Samui during its 2008 world cruise.
